Recently I talked to a coworker about how I thought we were entering a new Internet era. In my periodization of the Internet, there are five eras:
- The Beginning (1982-1990)
- The Wild West (1991-2008)
- The Corporatization (2009-2016)
- The Post-Corporatization (2017-2024)
- TBD Era (2025 to ?)
I won’t touch on the eras right now, but without a doubt, my favorite era was The Wild West. It was a time of exploration, a time of building for the sake of building, and a time where things broke because they were half-baked and not because of “improvements.”
I came across Simon Willison on Bluesky and have been reading (and enjoying) his posts for the past couple of weeks. Recently, he posted “My approach to running a link blog” and it inspired me to start this link blog / commonplace notebook / microblog.
Instead of privately bemoaning the loss what I love about the Internet, I can publicly bring those parts to the Internet. So expect links, charts, pictures, and all the neat stuff I come across while scrolling.
No promises on cadence.
